Understanding The Difference Between SSDI And SSI
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are benefits that are designed to provide income to people who are too disabled to work. While both programs are operated by the Social Security Administration (SSA), they are not the same.
From our office in Gaffney, our legal team assists clients in both South Carolina and North Carolina. Attorney Anna-Karina Parker understands how difficult it can be to understand the SSDI and SSI claims process or appeals. When you are not able to work because of a disability, our lawyers at Parker & Bain, LLC can effectively represent your interests.
What Is SSDI? What Is SSI? How Are They Similar Or Different?
SSDI and SSI are both federal programs, so the eligibility requirements are the same whether you file your claim in North Carolina, South Carolina or any other state. Applicants under either program must be disabled to the point that they are unable to perform substantial gainful work activity to qualify for benefits, and the application process is the same for both.
However, SSDI and SSI have different eligibility rules:
- SSDI is based on your work history and requires you to pay into the Social Security system through your payroll taxes to be “insured” through work credits. Based on your age, you must have a specific number of work credits to qualify. Your income and resources are not a factor of eligibility. SSDI is also subject to a five-month waiting period from the onset of disability before benefits can be paid.
- SSI is a needs-based system that is not dependent upon your work history. Your income and resources (and the income and resources of your spouse, if they live with you) must be considered before eligibility is determined. SSI is not subject to any waiting period before benefits can be paid.
In some cases, applicants may be eligible to file for both SSDI and SSI. Technical eligibility for either program is usually determined by SSA prior to the determination of disability.
